Bill, a senior manager, has been with his company more than thirty years. Recently, Bill read this book and took the concepts in it to heart, and at the age of fifty-eight, decided to begin keeping a tally of his weekly accomplishments. Wisely, he also decided to graph his entire career Quotient-style.

Bill has a corner office and a great compensation package, but his QTNT score indicates he is not in near as good a shape, career-wise, as he thought he was based on what he is paid. Even worse, he hasn’t been for some time. Why have they kept him around? Contacts? Industry knowledge? Expertise? Whatever the reason, he now realizes it can’t last much longer.

Bill’s Quotient history, below, and the accompanying graph illustrate the biggest issue: Since the age of forty-five, his performance has been declining in a downward curve. After peaking at $265,000, Bill has never again produced that much money for the company.
